Arborists compete for top tree climbing title

Five of Australia's best male arborists have progressed to today's final of the National Tree Climbing Championships in Adelaide's south parklands.

Victorian Kiah Martin won the women's final yesterday and will represent Australia in the International Championships in Chicago later in the year.

Craig Hinton from International Society of Arboriculture Australia says arborists get a completely different view of the world.

"Most of our events would be in trees that are at least 20 or 30 metres tall. That's a fairly common workday for the people in our industry," he said.

"You don't find too many people in our industry who are afraid of heights."

He says it is a spectacular event.

"Competitors have to climb a rope vertically 80 feet in the air, as quickly as they possibly can," he said. "So yes, they're big trees."
